sustainable holiday gift giving

Updated: Nov 28, 2022

It's no news that the recent pandemic outbreak has changed our society as a whole. Effecting everything from remote work at home to intimate gatherings and events, to shopping online, all parts of our daily life have been slowly transformed during these difficult times. Staying at home could be attributed to the reason for people to start reflecting more on how they could change and also make the world a better place. We all started to think of ways to improve our day to day lives and better our communities - giving rise to the sustainability topic.

According to a 2020 Accenture global poll, consumers have changed their habits drastically during the pandemics: 60% of participants stated that they have made more ethical, sustainable, or environmentally friendly purchases since the pandemic; and the same survey also revealed that 90% of people were likely to keep doing so.

We are still healing as we are moving through these difficult times - and this Holiday Season is an important one, since it will be the first one we are having with the end of the global COVID-19 pandemic in sight. However, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, holiday decorations like bows, bags, and other items produce 1 million tons of trash per week that end up in landfills. Additionally, making and sending gifts results in the emission of greenhouse gases that warm the globe.

So, how can you celebrate Holiday Season and still keep a sustainable mindset? The answer would be - shop less, and give more. Instead of shopping for gifts that your loved ones will throw into the back of their closet, try and make it more meaningful. Try not to spend your money on fast fashion items that will only last for a few uses - instead, shop for high-quality items that are made locally and sustainably. During this Holiday Season, it's time to think about shopping more consciously - this way you can be more mindful and sustainable and select meaningful gifts.
